Nowadays, with Barbosa-Vásquez as its Music Director, The ACO (The Americas Chamber Orchestra) at Bloomington IN, has a composer in residence for an active new music development within the Orchestra and its community. In addition, the Opera Summer Camp (CASC) in Los Angeles, CA has an important composition component within the camp. And for 2021 commissioned a totally brand new LatinAmerican Opera with high community involvement.
Following this artistic commitment to supporting new creative voices, The Americas Chamber Orchestra is launching its first Call for Scores 2020. The Orchestra is working to redefine the Chamber Orchestra practice in the American continent. Highlighting the best of all the countries within the continent and the musicians' worldwide background, the Orchestra works to consolidate a solid music entity that represents the continent chamber orchestra practice within the next years.
With a careful balance between the standard repertoire and exploration of worldwide music, the Orchestra is preparing its 20-21 season with Symphonic, Choral Symphonic, Opera and Chamber Music concerts always with a close approach to its communities. For that, in its opening concert of the Season, TheACO will be premiering the winner of its first Call for Scores 2020. The piece will be performed in public and recorded by the Orchestra's string players on Oct 1st, 2020 in the Auer Hall (Jacobs School of Music Indiana University). The recording will be made available to the composer.
The Orchestra is inviting composers of all ages, nationalities, and music styles to submit works composed for a string orchestra comprising 4 first violins, 4 second violins, 3 violas, 2 celli, and 1 contrabass (4 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1). The work will be selected by a panel of composers, musicians, and Maestro Barbosa-Vásquez.
